ESU Archives:Emporia State University Debate Program Trophy Collection

ESU Archives student assistants are busy cleaning, organizing, and housing over
400 trophies, plaques, plates, and other awards earned by ESU’s debate teams between
1931 and 1997. The Emporia State University Debate Program Trophy
Collection represents the history and success of teams under the direction of thirteen
coaches: George R. R. Pflaum, James Lowther, Charles Masten, Howard
Holladay, Jim Trent, John DeBross, Larry Larmer, John Lehman,
Marvin Cox, David Matheny, Candy Clark, Steve DePoe,
and Gene Strickland. The awards were earned at 50 different
tournaments held across the United States.
This collection and other information about campus debate
and the Department of Communication and Theatre is available
via research service. The ESU Archives may be reached by telephone

Writing Center Workshop, APA/MLA Style

William Allen White Library Open House and Halloween!

Friday, October 30th the WAWL will be celebrating the the newly renovated (and possibly haunted) 2nd and 1st floors! Tours will be held at 9:30 a.m, 11:30 a.m, and 2:30 p.m. Those wishing to participate can meet in the WAW Library Lobby.

Dr. Barry Smith will also be present for a reading of his newly published mystery novel, Only Milo. There will be two chances to participate in this event... one at 10:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. The reading will be held in WAW Library Room 222 (Seminar Room). Copies of Only Milo will be available for purchase and autographing after the readings!

The Library Circleview Cafe will also be celebrating the open house and Halloween with Spook-tacular Specials! Hot drinks will be 1/2 off all day long and there will be FREE refills for ESU Libraries and Archives Coffee Mugs (if you don't already have a mug, they will be available to purchase at the cafe). Also, in honor of homecoming, those who are wearing their Homecoming Buttons can receive a small hot drink for only .25 cents!

It will be a fun day at the library as we celebrate the open house and the holiday! Free candy will be handed out through the day and several costumed workers will be roaming the floors. So stop by, and check it out!

Food For Fines

Once again, the William Allen White Library is kicking off Food for Fines! The promotion that benefits the Salvation Army Food Pantry and at the same time helps reduce or eliminate your library fines! So how does this work? It's easy! Bring non-perishable canned goods and packaged items to the Circulation Desk of W.A.W, located in the lobby, in exchange for your library fines. One food item equals $1.00 in fines and you can pay off up to $30 in fines!

So when can you start bringing items?

We will begin the collection on Monday, April 27th and go through May 22nd!
There is one small catch; food cannot be used to pay off replacement costs for damaged or un-returned materials or for processing fees. Also, there are a few requirements that include the following:
Requirements for donations:
--Only non-perishable canned goods and packaged items are accepted.

--Food must not be outdated, according to date stamping on the package.

--Packages must be unopened and undamaged.

--No candy or produce.

Last, but certainly not least... you don't have to have a fine to participate! Donations are gladly taken to the Salvation Army Food Pantry! Last time, we collected approximately 1,183 items. Let's see if we can beat that this time around! So get busy, go shopping, and have some fun participating in Food for Fines!

NEED I SAY TONGUE IN CHEEK?

In 1982 a group of Emporia State University professors began a crusade of sorts to "put God back into math." At the time creationist beliefs were as hot a topic as they are now. It's a subject that just cannot be put to rest. According to an article that appeared January 5, 1982 in The Kansas City Times, professor Sam Dicks explained that God in his infinite wisdom would have never created something as messy as pi then, with no smirk in sight, was quoted as having said, "I think we deserve to be taken as seriously as the creationist."

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14- a great day to have a little fun with math. A recording containing information on The Institute for Pi Research as well and other materials having to do with the groups findings is available through research service by e-mailing archives@emporia.edu or calling (620)341-6431

University Archives

Emporia State University Archives was established by charter in 1987, and serves as the repository of record for the University and the administrative center for numerous heritage collections relevant to the University’s history or in support of the academic disciplines explored by faculty, students and others throughout the scholarly community. Significant holdings include the personal papers of William Allen White, a multiple-Pulitzer winning journalist, political advisor of nine US Presidents, and friend of hundreds of literary, art, science and political figures of the early 20th Century; and the memorial collection of art and manuscripts documenting the career and influence of May Massee, who, in the early 20th Century, established two of the first three children’s book divisions in American publishing houses, and whose stable of authors and illustrators won a higher percentage of major awards for their works than any publishing house has achieved since. Other collections include the Walter M. Andersen Collection, an extensive photography collection tracing the history of the railroad in Kansas; and such unquestionably unique items as a scrapbook of observations made of Woodrow Wilson when he was President of Princeton by a student in his jurisprudence class (later a History professor at ESU); and a scrapbook of photos and correspondence concerning the 19th Century British and American friends and associates of a large American landowner’s family, including Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, several of their children, British authors Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sir Walter Scott, US President John Quincy Adams and many, many others.

The May Massee Collection and gallery is open to the public from 8-5 M-F in room 308B of the White Library. All about OpenURL

We're pleased to announce a new feature that has been implemented partially here at WAW Library! OpenURL is a technology that will make searching for results in databases simpler and easier.

Essentially, we subscribe to a number of databases (you find these on the A to Z list of databases on our E-Resources page) and journals (you find these on the 'journals' link on the main library page). When we subscribe to a database, our users may search it, but may not be able to access the articles they find. This could be because we only purchase access to a subset of articles from the database, or because the database only provides abstracts of articles, not the fulltext. Previously you would have to repeat the same search in multiple databases to find an article and then go to the Journals search tool to find where we have access to the journal with the article you want.

OpenURL is a standard that more and more database vendors are coming into compliance with. When a database is OpenURL compliant, and the library has activated their OpenURL function, you will see
appear with every search result. Click it, and you send the information about that one article to numerous online resources, which will then send back a result if they have that article in full text.

So with OpenURL, if a database doesn't have article access, you don't need to repeat your search in every database. A simple click will tell you if we have it in one of many online resources!

This is a new technology, and we will be progressing with it steadily over the next few months. Each database we implement, both as a starting point and as a supplier of data, needs to be individually triggered and tested. Please let us know if one of them fails to work properly. A supplier of data is improperly working if the link it provides is broken. A starting point database (called an origin) is broken if the resulting popup with links does not have at least links to catalogs for KU, KSU, and Washburn.

Keep your eyes open as you search our databases and please take advantage of this new feature!

Open Access Day

October 14 is Open Access Day. Why does this matter to you? Here is a brief description of Open Access by Peter Suber:

"Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. What makes it possible is the internet and the consent of the author or copyright-holder.

In most fields, scholarly journals do not pay authors, who can therefore consent to OA without losing revenue. In this respect scholars and scientists are very differently situated from most musicians and movie-makers, and controversies about OA to music and movies do not carry over to research literature.

OA is entirely compatible with peer review, and all the major OA initiatives for scientific and scholarly literature insist on its importance. Just as authors of journal articles donate their labor, so do most journal editors and referees participating in peer review.

OA literature is not free to produce, even if it is less expensive to produce than conventionally published literature. The question is not whether scholarly literature can be made costless, but whether there are better ways to pay the bills than by charging readers and creating access barriers. Business models for paying the bills depend on how OA is delivered.

There are two primary vehicles for delivering OA to research articles: OA journals and OA archives or repositories.

OA archives or repositories do not perform peer review, but simply make their contents freely available to the world. They may contain unrefereed preprints, refereed postprints, or both. Archives may belong to institutions, such as universities and laboratories, or disciplines, such as physics and economics. Authors may archive their preprints without anyone else's permission, and a majority of journals already permit authors to archive their postprints. When archives comply with the metadata harvesting protocol of the Open Archives Initiative, then they are interoperable and users can find their contents without knowing which archives exist, where they are located, or what they contain. There is now open-source software for building and maintaining OAI-compliant archives and worldwide momentum for using it.

OA journals perform peer review and then make the approved contents freely available to the world. Their expenses consist of peer review, manuscript preparation, and server space. OA journals pay their bills very much the way broadcast television and radio stations do: those with an interest in disseminating the content pay the production costs upfront so that access can be free of charge for everyone with the right equipment. Sometimes this means that journals have a subsidy from the hosting university or professional society. Sometimes it means that journals charge a processing fee on accepted articles, to be paid by the author or the author's sponsor (employer, funding agency). OA journals that charge processing fees usually waive them in cases of economic hardship. OA journals with institutional subsidies tend to charge no processing fees. OA journals can get by on lower subsidies or fees if they have income from other publications, advertising, priced add-ons, or auxiliary services. Some institutions and consortia arrange fee discounts. Some OA publishers waive the fee for all researchers affiliated with institutions that have purchased an annual membership. William Allen White Book Awards

The library is going to be very busy on Saturday. Why? Because it's time for the William Allen White Children's Book Awards.

From the WAW Award website:

Opportunities to meet a favorite author don’t happen every day. But for a group of Kansas third- through eighth-graders, that opportunity will happen Saturday, Oct. 4 in Emporia.

Authors of this year’s two William Allen White Children’s Book Award winners will be spending the day in Emporia, attending the celebration and ceremony that accompanies the long-running recognition program for literature aimed at young readers.

The winners of this year’s awards, Ann M. Martin, author of “A Dog’s Life,” and L. D. Harkrader, who wrote “Airball: My Life in Briefs,” will participate in autograph sessions, meet with students, and receive their awards during a ceremony Saturday afternoon in Emporia’s William Lindsay White Auditorium.

Activities for the 56th annual celebration begin Friday, Oct. 3, with read-ins and sleepovers for third through eighth-grade students at the Emporia Recreation Center, 313 W. Fourth. Students will have an opportunity to meet and talk with the visiting authors during the read-ins. Space for this event is limited to 100 students and adults.

Saturday’s activities move to the second floor of Emporia State University’s Memorial Union. There, participants can purchase copies of the winning books and have them autographed by the authors from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Other souvenirs of the event will also be available for purchase.

At the same time, author Beverley Buller will also be autographing her new book, “From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White.”

Additional children’s activities will take place from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., also on the second floor of the Union.

The authors and celebration participants will join a parade from ESU to the William Lindsay White Auditorium at 12:15 p.m., preceding the awards ceremony at the auditorium at 1 p.m. There, Martin and Harkrader will be presented with their White Award medals, and will answer questions from the audience.

Tickets for the awards ceremony are $5 per person, and will be available at the door at White Arena or they may be purchased in advance, registration forms are available on the William Allen White Children’s Book Awards website www.emporia.edu/libsv/wawbookaward/ . The White Awards Program is directed by ESU and is supported by the Trusler Foundation. The program was founded by Ruth Carver Gagliardo, a children’s literature specialist, to honor the memory of one of the state’s most distinguished citizens by encouraging Kansas schoolchildren to read and enjoy good books.

ESU Archives is on the Move!

Due to planned HVAC and electrical renovations in the William Allen White Library, ESU Archives will be moved soon to the Anderson Memorial Library on C of E Drive. Archives personnel are currently packing collections, office equipment and supplies to be ready for the move. During the week of September 22, a local moving company will transport our collections from the White Library to the Anderson Library. In order to focus completely on the move, the Archives Reading Room (White Library, room 119) will be unavailable to on-site researchers from September 22-25.

Beginning October 1, the Archives Reading Room will be closed for the duration of the renovations. The May Massee Gallery in room 308B of the White Library will remain open, and the May Massee Collection will remain open to on-site researchers during the renovations. Researchers can still access all of the collections via Research Service. For more information or to submit a Research Service request, e-mail archives@emporia.edu or call Archives personnel at (620)341-6431. We are happy to make copies, scan items or help with your archival research needs in any way that we can.

You can access many of our finding aids online through the Archives Catalog (http://www.emporia.edu/libsv/) or the “Libraries and Archives” tab in Buzz-In.
Because the collections are being warehoused during the renovations, the amount of time it takes to process research requests will increase. Your patience and understanding is appreciated!

Coffee Shop Open House Days

This week in the Coffee Shop we have been celebrating the Open House by offering a variety of prizes and fun games! The turnout was tremendous and we have one final day to go. Students, faculty and all are invited to enjoy half-price hot drinks all day long. This includes coffee, hot cocoa and tea. So come on by for a warm drink, (or other beverage if you prefer), and then take a look at the newly furnished first floor that everyone is talking about! Also, feel free pull up a seat and stay awhile...after all, there's nothing quite like a good book, a relaxing space and refreshments at half price. The perfect way to start the weekend!

Archives Orientation Sessions

Archives Orientation Sessions
Please join ESU Archives personnel for one or both of the Archives Orientation sessions scheduled on Friday, September 5.
The sessions will take place in room 119 of the William Allen White Library, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. (Session 1) and 1:00-2:00 p.m. (Session 2).
Particularly directed toward new faculty and staff, the Archives Orientation is suitable for anyone who has never used ESU Archives, or who would like more information on the Archives' holdings, research facilities, on-line catalog and collections, and the pending move of the Archives' offices. Participants will also be invited to tour the Archives' facilities. The one-hour session will end in the May Massee Gallery, room 308B of the White Library.
Please remember, no food or drink in the Archives!

Need to access an electronic reserve article for your course? How about remote access to electronic resources for research. or checking "My Library Account" for any fines or holds on a book? White Library has upgraded the login process to make the login process easier than ever!

Currently enrolled ESU students, faculty, and staff can log in using their Buzz-In user names and passwords. If you are not affiliated with ESU but have a Kansas Resident card, you can log in to "My Library Account with your name, ID, and a PIN you create for yourself.

White Library's TCS Kiosk

White Library is pleased to announce that beginning Monday, August 25, ESU's Technology and Computing Services will feature a kiosk in the library for expanded computing services. The kiosk will be located on the library's 2nd floor, next to the Reference/Information Desk.

Hours for the library kiosk will be:

Mondays -- Thursdays, 6:00 to 11:00 p.m.
Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sundays, 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m.

Please stop by in person for help with E-mail, Buzz-In, and Blackboard account issues, on-campus wireless access, and general PC and computing questions.

How Do I Use E-Reserves or E-Resources Off Campus?

If you have accessed any of our electronic resources from off campus, or needed an item on electronic reserve, you know that you must enter some information first. Here are some helpful hints:

When you click on a link for an e-resource or an e-reserve, your screen will look like the one posted here. Enter your first and last name (and be sure to add a space between the first and last name.)

Your University ID number is the number that begins with E. If you don't know your number, go to http://studentaccess.emporia.edu/ and click on "Look Up Student ID". Your user name and password are the same as for Buzz-In.

For "Enter your PIN", you will create a library PIN. The PIN needs to be six or more characters, and a combination of letters and numbers. When you create the PIN for the first time and click on "Submit", you will be prompted to "Please Enter a New PIN". Type your new PIN two more times, and you are set.

What if you forget your PIN? No problem. Click on the link "Forgot Your PIN?" and type your name and ID number. Within a few minutes, you will have a message sent to your ESU E-mail address. That message contains a link that is good for three hours. Click on the link and you can reset your own PIN.

Celebrate our 1st Floor with an Open House!

Mark your calendars for Tuesday through Friday, September 2-5. The Libraries and Archives are planning an open house and activities that week to celebrate our NEW remodeled 1st floor.

On Wednesday, September 3, a reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. on the 1st floor. Everyone is invited to attend!

The remodeling began last summer and fall, when our bound periodicals, theses and dissertations, and microfilm were moved to compact shelving on the 1st floor. This move opened up the rest of the floor to a large sunny space. New carpet and paint freshened up the floor, and comfortable armchairs, sofas, and booths were the final touch along with tables and rolling chairs for group study.

Our Browsing Fiction collection is also located on the 1st floor. Pull up a chair, grab a good book, and enjoy the new space!

Under construction...

When you come over to White Library, you might find that certain areas are under construction! The library's 1st floor has been remodeled to become an inviting study area. Our Browsing Fiction collection has also been moved to the 1st floor. Comfortable furniture will be added, and the bound periodicals, microfilm, and theses and dissertations are now in compact shelving for better access.

Stay tuned! We are planning an Open House soon after the start of the fall semester to highlight not only the 1st floor, but also other services and resources to help you.

Did you know that you can see lists of new books and new media resources added by White Library? Here's how:

Go to the library's Web site at http://library.emporia.edu and click on "Library Catalog". Then, click on "Featured Items List".

You can then click on lists for "New Book Shelf", "New Media Materials", and "New Government Documents". Any of these items can be checked out immediately, unless they are noted as "Library Use Only."

Also, be sure to browse other lists for the most current William Allen White Children's Book Awards Masterlist and the White Children's Book Awards winners from 1952 to present.
